How to fix damaged windows/ window panes?
Damage such as scratches or cracks on the window glass is at least a visual annoyance, but does not always mean that the window pane has to be completely replaced. The following article deals with how the individual types of damage are to be assessed and what options there are to eliminate them.
Scratches in the window glass
Although glass is generally very resistant, unsuitable cleaning agents and tools or building materials can cause damage. In order to prevent this from the outset, you should avoid using abrasive cleaning agents as well as chemical products. The glass can also be scratched by finger rings or dirty cleaning rags. Once the damage – i.e., a scratch – is in the glass, there are various methods of removing it.
Prepare the window pane
In the first step, the glass pane is cleaned thoroughly and residue-free so that any remaining particles do not cause new scratches. The cleaning is ideally done with water and a microfiber or window cleaning cloth.
Remove scratches on the disc
Superficial scratches can be easily polished off with toothpaste or whipped chalk. To do this, the material is placed on a soft cloth and polished on the defective area until it has disappeared.
Ammonia also effectively tackles scratches. 15 to 20 ml to 1 liter of water are applied with a soft cloth and rinsed off with clear water after a short exposure time. It is important to wear protective gloves as well as respiratory and eye protection.
Polishing red is a professional means of polishing hard surfaces. The agent is applied dry, applied with a cloth and polished up.
Glass polishing paste is a special paste that can be used to remove superficial scratches from glass. Special polishing sets with attachments for the drill are best for applying the paste and buffing away the scratch.
