How to change a window? If the window frames are still in good condition, you can start renovating. But most often the frame, which constitutes the architecture of the window, is in poor condition and requires installation of your new window using the total removal method. Here’s how to do it:
Remove the old frame from the damaged window
The leaves must first be removed with a chisel and a mallet. Then remove the hardware: hinges and lock keepers. Remove the frame itself. This step can be tricky. If you have trouble removing the frame, cut out the uprights first, then the top and bottom rails. Make sure that all the elements that interfere with the installation of the new window are removed. Examine the condition of the window sills and sills to make any necessary renovations.
Secure the new window
Check that the dimensions of the frame and the opening match. Then apply a strip of self-adhesive sealant on the periphery of the frame and on the face in contact with the wall. Place a strip of decompressed foam at the level of the lower cross member of the frame. The frame is then engaged in the rebate. This delicate operation is easier to perform in pairs. Check the plumb and level of your sleeper. Finally, hold the frame with a clamp at the top of the upright.
Secure the carpentry
Drill the masonry by inserting your drill through the holes in the upright provided for this purpose. Install and close the leaves with their wedges. It is at this moment that the dormant takes its definitive place in the masonry. Replace the leaves by removing the wedges and removing the protective film on the glazing. Place the covers for the screws and the hinges.
Finally, it is now necessary to fill the space between the masonry and the new frame with expanding polyurethane foam. Place a foam backing around the perimeter of the frame, then a sealing bead with silicone sealant.
